My Celebrity Crush is Young Miko and Here's Why
Written by Daphne Bryant
Celebrity crushes. We all have them, and today I’m pitching my favorite to you. If you’re not familiar with Young Miko, now’s the time to get familiar. Born María Victoria Ramírez de Arellano Cardona, Young Miko is a 26-year old rapper and singer from Puerto Rico. Her lyricism is fun and playful, often coupled with a deadly flow and Latin trap beats. In my opinion, one listen is all it takes to love her, but just in case you’re not convinced, here’s an entire article about the queer superstar.
There are three things I really love about Miko (other than her face LMAO). Firstly, she is so very proud of and open about her sexuality. The artist identifies as a lesbian, and she doesn’t shy away from this fact in her music. Her 2023 single“ Lisa” is unapologetically horny, a three-minute long track about being attracted to all kinds of women and finding them irresistible. She’ll always use she/her pronouns when referring to her love interests, and her music videos frequently star beautiful girls.
On stage Miko often dons rainbow flags and uses rainbow-colored microphones. She’s been a very public advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and even starred in Karol G and DJ Tiësto’s music video for“ CONTIGO”, which is so very gay and all of you need to watch it NOW. Fun fact: that music video actually inspired our Good Luck Babe photoshoot, which you can find here.
Another thing I really like about Miko is how comfortable she is in her gender presentation. I would say her personal style is the perfect mix of masculinity and femininity. She’s been known to wear the classic Nike sports bra, pull up to award shows in suits, and give off what her fans would call“ masc energy”, but she also loves the color pink, girly makeup, anime and kawaii characters. This duality is part of Miko’s charm, and it’s also a bit of a fuck you to anyone who expects her to be hard just because of the crowd she often frequents. Not only is Miko one of the first openly queer musicians in the Latin trap scene, but she defies the stereotypes that are so often applied to the genre and its’ members.
Finally, Miko is not just another brunette masc with short, fluffy hair, you know the kind you see on those“ Every lesbian has a crush on…” videos, the ones that always feature the same people. I know Miko is white-passing, but she is also unashamedly Latina, raps primarily in Spanish, and pays homage to her roots. She is loudly queer and not afraid of the L-word. She is an artist who wears whatever she wants and doesn’t prescribe to the Tik Tok version of lesbians so many people are perpetrating now. I genuinely don’t think enough people know about her, and she’s the kind of musician that deserves to be known. So did I get you? Are you hooked? Then you need to go see her live (and I’ll live vicariously through you)! Tickets for her XOXO tour are on sale now and as cheap as $35 each.
