I’m Charmed by Clairo’s New Album and You Should Be Too: A Album Review

Written by Elizabeth Weiss

Clairo’s long-awaited third studio album Charm dropped this past Friday, July 12th. Like many Clairo and indie music aficionados, I immediately dived into the album. I’ve immersed myself in all things Charm this past week and am ready to give you the scoop.

My Thoughts:

Charm deviates from Clairo’s signature bubble pop, taking form as an effective combination of psychedelic folk and soft rock. Her innovative smokey vocals and technical use of mixing easily make this album one of the best of 2024. Not to mention, the raw instrumentals are exquisite. The delicate use of guitar creates an acoustic atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy coffee shop. Clairo’s lyrics extend upon her vulnerability, reflecting on her self-growth as she navigates the complexities of growing up. At only 25, she has lived a lifetime through her music through her music.

The Ranking:

1. “Pier 4”
Abby Miller put it perfectly: “Once again, going three for three, ‘Pier 4’ is at the top of the pyramid.” Or something like that. This track seemingly fits the album’s theme of vulnerability, but stands out as a testament to loneliness and the longing for connection. The raw, raspy guitar combined with Clairo’s soothing vocals make it my number one.
2. “Echo”
This might be the most underrated song on the album. “Echo” is reminiscent of the 70s but integrates an eerie backtrack that keeps it fresh. The use of mixing combines so many elements, including echoes and randomly placed drum solos, making this song worthy of spot number two.
3. "ADD UP MY LOVE"
This track feels particularly special. The lyrics, touching on the feeling of not being enough, are incredibly relatable. In Clairo’s case, it’s about worrying she isn’t enough for a romantic partner, a sentiment that many of us can identify with. I love a relatable song, and this one hits home.
4. “Slow Dance”
The piano in the intro is simply chef’s kiss. As Clairo builds up to the chorus, the song transitions into a techno vibe that is both unexpected and delightful. It evokes an untraceable feeling of nostalgia that very few songs possess.
5. "Juna”
While the entirety of  Charm is groovy, “Juna” is arguably the most jam-worthy track. It instantly hooks you in and proves to be incredibly engaging. For such a lowkey chill song, it makes you want to dance.
6. “Nomad”
The opening track effectively uses mixing and instrumentals to create a folky vibe. It picks up smoothly at the chorus, and the energy of the track goes up and down like a wave. Just like a nomad, the vibes travel place to place. ank You”
7. "thank you"
Drum-heavy and paired with soft vocals, “Thank You” stands out with its unique sound. The transition into the chorus and standout lyrics such as “I put my pride on the line” make it memorable.
8. “Sexy to Someone”
While this song is catchy with a good beat, and the desire to feel sexy is something we can all resonate with, I’ve overplayed it a bit, so it ranks lower for me. Still, it’s easy to see that it’s the standout song for many fans.
9. "SECOND NATURE"
Clairo truly uses her voice as an instrument in this track. The da-dums parallel the drum and create harmony within the track. She explores her vocal range by playing with the pitch.
10. "glory of the Snow”
“Glory of the Snow” reminds me so much of Rex Orange County. While it's fun and danceable, it doesn’t quite hit the same highs for me as other tracks on the album.
11. "Terrapin”
It was challenging to pick a least favorite track because every song on the album holds a special place in my heart. However, “Terrapin” felt a bit too lowkey for my taste. I prefer a more active and exciting rhythm, but it’s still a beautiful track in its own right.

Charm is a stunning showcase of Clairo’s growth as an artist, both musically and personally. Each track offers a glimpse into her journey, making the album a must listen.
