Have no idea what career you want to pursue? Here are some fun, exciting career ideas for our fellow creatives ⋆౨ৎ˚⟡.•
1. Editor-in-Chief of a Magazine
An EIC heads all departments of a magazine and is held accountable for delegating tasks to staff members and managing them; they’re also typically the lead editor. This position is perfect for those of us who are a little bossy and like things to go our way. If you are interdisciplinary and understand a little bit about a bunch of things (such as publishing, journalism, fashion, literature, photography, etc.,), then you are extremely qualified to be an EIC; you’ll actually have meaningful advice and insight to give your team and will be useful in all aspects of the publication’s production process. Imagine your Anna Wintour era: being a fashion icon, invitations to hallowed events and becoming a huge name in the magazine world.
U.S. Average Salary: between $76,501 and $109,863
2. Vintage Store Owner
Vintage store owners are exactly what they sound like: it is their job to curate collections of rare and older items and run a shop (whether online, in-person or both). If you love fashion and have a business mindset, acquiring skills like product knowledge, brand building, sourcing and selling will be a piece of cake! I’m talking to you former Depop resellers! Why go through a third-party app when you could profit from having your own vintage store and doing it your way?
U.S. Average Salary: $65,335
3. Stylist
Stylists create and maintain a person’s or brand’s visual aesthetic by selecting and coordinating clothing, accessories and props. The fun thing about styling is that every photoshoot, set, and event is different, so you get to experiment and try new things all the time; versatility is a huge selling point of the job. Many stylists go to fashion school to hone their skills, network and gain professional opportunities, but this isn’t the only options A lot of stylists get started by helping out on friends’ sets, or by being a digital creator. One thing a stylist should definitely have is a large and varied closet, or the ability to thrift and often; as you work your way up you’ll sometimes have money handed to you by companies, and that allows you to outsource without spending out of your own pockets. All those who were voted Best Dressed in high school, raise your hand!
U.S. Average Salary: $58,131
4. Creative Director
Creative directors lead creative teams, developing and delivering a strategic vision for clients. They are responsible for the creative process from start to finish, and ensure that the final product aligns with a company’s brand and objectives. As a creative director, you must be a big-picture thinker who is able to conceptualize well, effectively manage a team, stay consistent, set budgets and timelines and make excellent presentations.Similarly to stylists, creative directors get assigned to a bunch of different, unique projects and are able to constantly flex their artistic muscles. The other thing about creative direction is that anyone can do it, and you don’t really need a degree or much experience either. A lot of people joke that this is a“ fake job”, but this so-called fake job also has the highest average salary on the list!
U.S. Average Salary: $144,351
5. Bookstore Owner
Being a bookstore owner is a labor of love, and it’s also incredibly rewarding. You can choose whether you want to sell new, used, rare, collectible books, or a combination. Bookstore owners can also specialize in a specific genre (like romance), or appeal to a specific audience (such as the LGBTQIA+ community). As a bookstore owner it is not only your job to sell books and manage your business; a good indepedent bookstore also has a comfortable, inviting atmosphere, builds relationship with local businesses and creates a signficant impact on their local community. My favorite bookstore back in Boston, Beacon Hill Books & Cafe, is a spiraling, five-floor dollhouse of a hangout, with comfortable seating and a huge collection. I can’t imagine Boston without that bookstore now: if you love reading and giving back, this story could be yours!
U.S. Average Salary: $54,343
6. Editorial Photographer
Editorial photographers capture images for publication in magazines, newspapers, and things of the sort. You might find yourself working in sports, or food, but the ultimate hot girl industry is fashion (photos of models and clothing).Editorials are different than typical advertising because there is always an element of storytelling; they are intimate and elaborate and require more planning and preparation. As an editorial photographer you’ll do research on your shoot, capture elements from multiple angles, and post process your photographs using photo editing software. Out of all the careers on this list, this job is definitely the most physical/tangible. You have to invest in equipment, have technical computer skills, and the ability to engage well with people on set, especially the models. However, it is pretty damn glamorous.
U.S. Average Salary: $60,735
